I walk past the front door in a sleepy fog, and a quick movement catches my eye. Outside the front door, where the summers vigorous lantana bushes have gone to messy seed, a flock of white-crowned sparrows are jousting with a couple of cardinals for the big purple seeds. Every morning, small birds dash in and out of this mess of branches and dead leaves, foraging for breakfast.
